Being “Named” The Lord who created you says: “ Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine.” —Isaiah 43:1
Paul’s the theological expert on our team,” my new boss, Bonnie, explained. As she introduced me to my co-workers, she named each one’s expertise, and I noticed more than one beam with pride at Bonnie’s naming. A couple of months later, I knew what my co-workers had felt, for Bonnie had also named me. When she introduced me to others or when we were in staff meetings, she often mentioned what she perceived as my special skill. Bonnie’s naming gave me confidence in my abilities, but it also helped me find my place at work and in the world. Thanks to Bonnie’s example, I began to try to notice the unique gifts that my friends and family possessed. And I started naming those strengths and complimenting others on what was good and special about their lives. Recently my friend Rhonda told me, “You know why I like being with you? You make me feel good about myself.” I grinned, delighted that I was succeeding in blessing others as Bonnie had blessed me.
Helping others see why they are special is a great way to remind them of how the heavenly Father loves them and has made them unique. — Jeanette Gardner Littleton —
