Useless Talk For there are many rebellious people who engage in useless talk and deceive others. —Titus 1:10
I watched in horror as the two men, my friends, argued about political issues going on in the world. In the end, because neither could convince the other of his position, they resorted to name-calling. Such words as racist, bigot, idiot, and worse came out. I was amazed that two friends could be so violent with each other. Why did they do this? I broke in and said, “Look, I can see wisdom in both of your positions. But descending into this kind of tactic is foolish, and it will hurt your friendship.” “Yeah, now Farmer’s gonna hit us with religion if we don’t watch out,” one announced to the other. I smiled. “If you want to know something about the Bible or Jesus or God, I’ll speak up. But I’m not going to call you infidels, although you probably are.” We all laughed again. “Come on,” I said, “Go vote for your beliefs and positions, but don’t resort to nastiness. Look, how about a Coke?” We all sat down to our sodas and moved on to more agreeable topics.
