Two Wounded Hearts, One Healing Touch How precious is your unfailing love, O God! —Psalm 36:7
I dreaded meeting her. I didn’t want to like her, much less love her—after all, she was the wayward woman who had been waiting in the wings when my thirty-two-year marriage died. Now a family event had brought us together; friends back home prayed for me concerning this encounter. What does a “replacement wife” look like? I wondered. What’s she have that I don’t? We were married for three decades. Over half my life. Been traded in. Thoughts, painful and relentless, taunted me. The awkward moment finally came. Help me, Lord! “Nice meeting you,” she drawled. I responded politely. As we chatted, I learned this was her fourth marriage. I sensed the baggage, the scars, the fears. Then, amazingly, I sensed something else: God working, helping me see her with His eyes of compassion and love. She extended her hand to say good-night. Impulsively, I hugged her. She hugged back tightly and sobbed. “You’re so beautiful,” she said, seeing Jesus’s love shining
through. Two wounded hearts, miraculously bound together by His loving, healing touch.
Just when we think it’s impossible, God’s “precious, unfailing love” steps in, transcending our greatest fears, healing our deepest hurts. — Carrie Shepherd —
