Rainstorm Reprieve If you can help your neighbor now, don’t say, “ Come back tomorrow, and then I’ll help you.” —Proverbs 3:28
Chills wracked my body as I completed my last errand. Maneuvering my vehicle through the rivulets of water that cascaded down the street, I couldn’t wait to get home and into dry clothes. Trudging through the fat raindrops that pelted the sidewalk, her worn coat wrapped close around her hunched body, a woman fought against the biting wind. I pulled over and opened the passenger door. “Need a ride home?” I asked. When I waved her inside, she hesitated, and then accepted the invitation. Tears spilled down her cheeks as she shook her head. “I have bills to pay. The electric company. The gas company. My landlord. If I don’t pay him today, he’ll kick me out.” I drove her to the appropriate places and helped her inside each building before taking her home. She uttered few words, but her parting grin spoke volumes. I arrived home late, cold and soaking wet, but God’s smile warmed my heart with a glow as bright as a crackling fire.
Don’t be afraid to get wet, for God’s warmth prevails even on rainy days. — Patti Shene —
