Renewed Spirits The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear a crushed spirit? —Proverbs 18:14

We hadn’t visited our son-in-law since he’d been diagnosed with brain tumors. When we did finally see him, I listened as he explained his sadness of not being able to see his “little man” or his beautiful daughter grow up. His spirit was crushed. After dinner, I took him aside. “Steve, I’ve prayed about telling you something for a while. I need you to listen for a moment. You’re a good man, you turned your life around from what it used to be, and, most important, you’re a wonderful father.” His eyes widened. My husband added, “We couldn’t be prouder of you.” A rim of moisture crept over Steve’s eyes. He wrapped his arms around my neck. “You don’t know how much that means to me,” he said. “I didn’t think anyone noticed that I was a good father except Pam. Pam and the kids are my life.” “Well, I’m sorry we didn’t say anything sooner,” my husband said. He and Steve shook hands. As they walked to the kitchen, Steve stepped with his body held a little taller. His

spirit was renewed.
