She Didn’t Thank Me Sensible people control their temper; they earn respect by overlooking wrongs. —Proverbs 19:11
Years ago I worked as a volunteer receptionist at a local charity. The recipients were mostly elderly individuals who were grateful for everything the charity provided. Well, usually. One afternoon I received a call from a recipient. Even though what she complained about was only a minor inconvenience, she was outraged and described her disgust in explicit terms. I was stunned. Who did this woman think she was? Then, my thinking changed. Why was she so angry? Had she lost her independence? Did she feel she had no control over her life? Was she sick, tired, lonely, overwhelmed? As I considered the potential answers, peace came over me. I answered her politely. She hung up on me. A few minutes later she called again, much calmer, and I transferred her to someone who could help. Since that day, I see people differently. Actions that once angered me now compel me to consider how that person is hurting and how I can help.
Consider the person, not the action. God calls us to love. — Cynthia Owens —
