Honor Your Leaders Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work. They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance. —1 Thessalonians 5:12
Our pastor stood humbly before the congregation. “I never thought this day would come,” he said with tears in his eyes. “But it is here. We have plans to spend time traveling and with family, but I will never forget the time you’ve given me here. I will take with me memories of great times, good times, and even some tough times. But you all have seen me through.” One of the elders came forward with a package. “Something we want to present to you, Pastor, for your many years of service. I hope you will find these things a refreshment.” The pastor opened the gifts right there. One was a plaque honoring his years of service. A second was a card with a large check. We’d collected the money in gratitude for the many sacrifices he’d made for us, as well as his love and constant concern for our needs. I went home that day realizing that honoring our leaders isn’t just something we should do when they retire, but frequently.
God calls our leaders to serve Him in this way. As we honor them we show love to them and to God. — Sam Donato —
