Love or Money? You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me. —John 12:8
The wedding was not lavish, but given the background of the young couple’s parents, it was more elaborate than the normal wedding. It was beautiful and it was also especially Christhonoring. “The money they spent should have been used to help orphans,” one of my friends snapped. Immediately I thought of the story in John 12 when the woman poured her perfume over Jesus’s head. Jesus’s treasurer suggested the perfume should have been sold and the money given to the poor. But Jesus didn’t agree. The most giving of men, He knew it was more important for this woman to show her love than for the money to be used in any other way. There are many times when we should sacrifice our resources for humanitarian causes and Christian ministries. But there are also times when we should use our resources to celebrate the people we love—whether through a wedding, a graduation, a birthday party or other celebration, or a nice gift.
Sometimes the best use of resources is a gift or event that says, “I care.” — Jeanette Gardner Littleton —
