Too Harried to Be Sacred This is a sacred day before our Lord. —Nehemiah 8:10
One harried day, I stopped for fast food and ran into an elderly man from my church. He pulled his son toward me. “I want you to meet Pauline, she’s a parish nurse,” he told his son. Then he explained to me, “We’re on our way back to the nursing home. My wife . . . is slipping away. If you could . . . it would be nice . . . come see her.” What did I get myself into? I groaned inwardly. God, you know all the plans I had for today… After all, I wasn’t going to start the parish nurse position until the first of the year. Another thought flashed through my mind. Let’s see if you really want to be a parish nurse. Okay, God, I’ll go there and leave my uprooted schedule for you to handle, I responded to Him. I went. I did nothing—sat, listened, watched the husband. He talked to his wife, kissed her, and wiped her face. He appreciated my visit so much.
